Hitachi Considers Selling Its Domestic White Goods Business

Hitachi is contemplating the sale of its domestic white goods business in Japan. The company has already reached out to several potential buyers, including South Korea's Samsung Electronics. If the deal goes through, the sale amount is expected to range from 100 billion yen to several hundred billion yen. Hitachi Global Life Solutions (Hitachi GLS), a subsidiary of Hitachi, is responsible for domestic white goods such as refrigerators and washing machines in Japan. In the fiscal year 2024, the sales of Hitachi GLS dropped to 367.6 billion yen.

Business Status and Strategic Transformation

Hitachi Considers Selling Its Domestic White Goods Business.pngDespite a decline in sales for Hitachi GLS in the fiscal year 2024, its adjusted EBITA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) increased by 13%, reaching 39.2 billion yen. However, the white goods business, which is mainly a one-time sale, has a low fit with Hitachi's "Lumada" business model that focuses on digital technology and aims for long-term, sustainable profitability from solution development to maintenance. Additionally, while the domestic white goods market in Japan saw growth during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased demand for home appliances and the trend of high added value, the long-term growth potential is limited by the country's aging population and declining birth rate. Meanwhile, Japan's dominant position in the global home appliance industry has gradually been replaced by Asian companies, including those from China.

Hitachi, whose main businesses include railways, power transmission and distribution equipment, IT services, and industrial equipment, is accelerating its transformation into a business model centered on digital technology. In recent years, Hitachi has actively restructured its business portfolio by acquiring the power transmission and distribution business of Switzerland's ABB in 2020 and the US digital transformation support company GlobalLogic in 2021, to strengthen its position in social infrastructure and digital fields. For businesses that do not align with the Lumada strategy, Hitachi has taken steps to divest, such as selling its former subsidiary, Hitachi Metals, and forming a joint venture with Turkey's large-scale enterprise Arçelik in 2021 to sell its overseas home appliance business.

Future Outlook

The plan to sell the domestic white goods business is an important step for Hitachi to further focus on its core business and accelerate its digital transformation. Although the home appliance business still has value for brand exposure, Hitachi internally believes that it is not the strategic focus for the future. Therefore, the company has simultaneously evaluated two options: complete divestment and continued operation. Hitachi's President, Toshiaki Higashihara, has stated that the business restructuring is not over and will continue to be reformed for growth. Although the sale process of the domestic home appliance business is under way, considering the role of home appliances in enhancing consumer brand awareness, Hitachi will also continue to maintain this business as an option.
