On July 30th, LG Display was selected for the second round of major projects by the National Growth Fund of South Korea - the "Ensuring OLED Gap" program, and received 1.5 trillion won in long-term low-interest financing support. At the same time, LG Display simultaneously invested 1.5 trillion won of its own funds to launch an investment totaling 3 trillion won (approximately $2.1 billion) for the next-generation OLED technology research and development and production infrastructure.
The National Growth Fund of South Korea was established by the Financial Services Commission at the end of 2025, aiming to systematically cultivate strategic high-tech industries such as semiconductors and displays. Currently, the total scale of this fund has expanded to 200 trillion won. This round of the "Guarantee OLED Gap" plan focuses on responding to the low-price competition pressure from Chinese panel manufacturers and consolidating South Korea's global competitiveness in high-end OLED.
LG Display's investment focuses on difficult-to-imitate high-end technology upgrades, with a major emphasis on Tandem OLED and LTPO equipment and manufacturing infrastructure. Tandem OLED achieves brightness enhancement, longer lifespan, and reduced power consumption through multi-layer light-emitting layer stacking. LTPO technology can reduce the refresh rate to 1Hz, significantly lowering power consumption. The aforementioned funds will accelerate the expansion of high-value-added markets such as IT equipment, vehicle displays, televisions, and gaming monitors.
In the context of the increasingly fierce global OLED market competition, South Korea's global OLED market share rebounded to 68.7% in 2025, marking the first increase in a decade. Although Chinese manufacturers have rapidly caught up in terms of shipment volume, South Korean enterprises still maintain a significant advantage in the profitability of mobile OLED. In the first quarter of 2026, LG Display and Samsung Display were the only two panel manufacturers in the industry to achieve profitability. LG Display was the first to commercialize tandem OLED in 2019, entered Apple's iPad Pro supply chain in 2024 and accounted for 65% of the share. At the same time, the world's first 14-inch LTPO Tandem OLED was successfully developed, and it is planned to be mass-produced by the end of the year.
