SK Hynix Invests 54 Trillion Won to Expand Yongin Y2 and Cheongju M17 Fabs

On August 7, SK Hynix announced a new fab investment plan totaling 54 trillion won, with 35.2 trillion won allocated to the Yongin Y2 facility and 19.1 trillion won to the Cheongju M17 facility. According to Omdia forecasts, the global DRAM and NAND flash memory market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19% from 2025 to 2030, as memory has evolved from a standard component into a core infrastructure element that determines AI performance.

Dual-Fab Layout

Yongin Y2 and Cheongju M17 Fab.jpgYongin Y2 is the second of four planned fabs within the Yongin semiconductor cluster, positioned as a high-end DRAM production base. With a total floor area of approximately 1.13 million square meters, construction is scheduled to begin in July 2027, with the first cleanroom coming online in June 2029. It will primarily mass-produce HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) and next-generation DRAM products. Cheongju M17, meanwhile, will further expand NAND flash production capacity, covering approximately 680,000 square meters. Construction is set to start in February 2027, with the first cleanroom operational by December 2028, synergizing with existing M11, M12, and M15 production lines.

Construction Progress and Planning

The Yongin semiconductor cluster spans a total area of approximately 4.16 million square meters. The first fab, Y1, is progressing smoothly, with its first cleanroom expected to come online in February 2027. Phase I power and water supply infrastructure for Y2 has already reached 99% completion. The Y2 investment encompasses auxiliary facilities including employee support buildings, an integrated R&D center, and water treatment systems, with the investment cycle extending through October 2031. The Cheongju campus, benefiting from mature production lines and well-established infrastructure, can achieve the shortest possible construction timeline, with M17 investment continuing through April 2031.

Outlook

SK Hynix has significantly accelerated the completion target for all four fabs in the Yongin cluster from 2045 to 2033. The company states that in the AI era, true competitiveness lies in the ability to deliver sufficient products at the exact moment customers need them. This simultaneous dual-fab expansion will not only solidify its own production capacity foundation but also strengthen the competitiveness of Korea's domestic semiconductor ecosystem, driving supply chain collaboration, employment growth, and regional economic vitality—injecting solid momentum into the stability of the global AI semiconductor supply chain.
