AUO Sells Singapore Electronics Plant to Western Digital

Panel maker AUO's board of directors has recently resolved to sell the factory building and related utility facilities of its Singapore subsidiary AFPD to hard disk drive leader Western Digital for 350 million Singapore dollars. The property subject to this transaction covers a building area of approximately 177,000 square meters. This marks AUO's third major asset disposal this year; the cumulative total of three transactions will bring approximately NT$34.7 billion back to the company, accelerating its transformation from traditional panel manufacturing toward a light-asset operating model.

Transaction Structure and Conditions

The buyer in this transaction is Western Digital (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and/or its designee. According to the procedures agreed upon by both parties, AFPD will present an OTP to the buyer for signature, and will grant a ten-business-day option period. However, the final transfer remains conditional upon the buyer obtaining approval from local Singapore authorities, after which the disposal gain can be recognized.

Asset Activation Strategy

AUO Sells Singapore Electronics.jpgAUO's Singapore plant was originally acquired from Toshiba Mobile Display in 2010, primarily undertaking production of panels for mobile device applications. However, as the global panel industry competitive landscape shifted dramatically, capacity expansion by Chinese mainland manufacturers exerted sustained pressure on lower-generation production lines. The plant's production lines gradually lost competitiveness in terms of technology and cost structure, and ceased operations at the end of 2023. This sale is a continuation of AUO's strategy of either repurposing lower-generation production lines with weaker competitiveness for new technologies or activating their asset value, with proceeds directed toward new business investments.

In fact, this is the third major plant disposal completed by AUO in 2026. At the end of July this year, the Huaya plant was sold to Quanta Computer for NT$19.7 billion, and the Kaohsiung plant was sold to ASE for NT$6.3 billion, with disposal gains of approximately NT$13.4 billion and NT$4.3 billion respectively. Together with this Singapore plant transaction, AUO's total asset-activation proceeds this year amount to approximately NT$34.7 billion, significantly optimizing its financial structure.

Strategic Shift Toward Packaging

AUO is reallocating its capital expenditure. The board recently approved an additional NT$8.641 billion capital expenditure budget, directed toward value-added product development, new AI technologies, and mass production preparation. A portion of these funds will be invested in TGV and RDL pilot production lines. Chairman Paul S.L. Peng has publicly stated that AUO has made substantive progress in advanced packaging TGV and RDL processes as well as optical communications, and is extending FOPLP technology to emerging applications such as low-earth orbit satellite glass antennas and MicroLED CPO.
