Microchip’s AVR  DU USB MCUs, with Enhanced Security and 15W Power Output

Universal Serial Bus (USB) interfaces offer many advantages in embedded design, including compatibility with various devices, simplified communication protocols, field update capabilities, and power supply capabilities. To help easily integrate this functionality into embedded systems, Microchip Technology Inc.  Introduced AVR DU series microcontroller. As the next generation of Microchip 8-bit MCUS with integrated USB connectivity, the AVR DU series is designed to provide more robust security features and higher power output than previous versions.

● AVR DU Series: New generation 8-bit MCU with integrated USB connection

Greg Robinson, vice president of Microchip's 8-bit MCU division, highlighted the strategic integration of USB capabilities in the AVR DU family, saying, "USB is the standard communication protocol and power output solution for electronic devices. Microchip's AVR DU family combines the flexibility and enhanced power output capabilities of leading 8-bit MCUS to bring the benefits of USB to a wider range of embedded systems."

● Excellent power delivery and safety features

The AVR DU MCU stands out with its ability to deliver up to 15W of power from the USB interface, a feature that is rare among other USB microcontrollers in its class. This capability can be charged with 3A high current at 5V voltage, making these MCUS an excellent choice for devices such as power banks and rechargeable toys.

To address the growing threat of malicious attacks, the AVR DU family integrates Microchip's Programming and Debugging Interface Disable (PDID) capabilities. Once activated, this advanced code protection locks access to the programming/debugging interface and blocks unauthorized attempts to read, modify, or erase the firmware. The series also features a "Write-While-Read" (RWW) flash memory combined with a secure boot loader that allows designers to extend product life by using a USB interface for firmware updates without interrupting product operation.

● Cost-effective and space-saving design innovation

The AVR DU series further stands out with USB clock recovery, eliminating the need for expensive external crystals and reducing overall design and bill of materials (BOM) costs. In addition, the core stand-alone peripherals (CIP) design enables engineers to integrate key device functions and system management tasks into a compact single-chip solution, saving PCB space and simplifying the design process.

● Application of AVR DU series

From fitness wearables and home appliances to agricultural and industrial applications, the AVR DU family of MCUS offers a wealth of benefits for embedded design developers in a variety of fields. The high efficiency and robust security features of this series make it a valuable component for innovative and reliable embedded system designs.
