IBM China's R&D Positions Suffer Access Closure, Potentially Affecting Over a Thousand Layoffs

IBM China has recently undergone a significant restructuring of its R&D department, which invo·uld still access email. The adjustment mainly affected the IBM China Development Laboratory (CDL) and the IBM China Systems Laboratory (CSL), involving more than 1000 employees.

In response to this unexpected situation, IBM China stated that the company would adjust its operations as needed to provide the best service to customers, and these changes would not affect the ability to support clients. The reasons for the company's decision are still unclear to employees, but it has been reported that IBM has notified employees whose permissions were revoked to participate in an online meeting on August 26, where further decisions may be announced.

Furthermore, employees of IBM China's Systems Laboratory have put forward some demands regarding layoffs and compensation, including 2N compensation (with no cap on the monthly salary benchmark for N), a six-month buffer period, cashing out of annual leave, unpaid home-visiting leave, and stock discounts. IBM China has confirmed that it will completely close the R&D department in China and provide affected employees with N+3 compensation.

It is worth noting that IBM has carried out several rounds of layoffs globally in the past two years, announcing 3,900 layoffs in January 2023 and planning to replace nearly 8,000 jobs with artificial intelligence. The closure of the R&D department in China may be part of IBM's global strategic adjustment and also reflects the operational challenges and adjustments of foreign companies in the Chinese market.
