Microchip Acquires Israeli Edge AI Chip Company Hailo

In July 2026, U.S. semiconductor giant Microchip Technology announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Israeli edge‑AI chip company Hailo. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the current fiscal quarter ending September 30, 2026, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hailo's Development Journey

1785225085796973.jpgHailo, founded in 2017, is an Israeli artificial‑intelligence chip company specializing in deep‑learning processors for edge devices. Its core product portfolio includes the Hailo‑8, Hailo‑10, and Hailo‑15 series of AI processors, which are widely deployed in smart cameras, industrial equipment, vehicles, robotics, and personal computing devices.

In its early years, Hailo quickly gained prominence with its high‑performance, low‑power edge AI processors. The company raised approximately $340 million to $350 million in cumulative funding from prominent investors including the Zisapel family, OurCrowd, Alfred Akirov, and Delek Automotive. In April 2024, Hailo completed a $120 million financing round, reaching a valuation of $1.2 billion.

However, this high valuation did not translate into sustainable revenue. From 2025 into early 2026, the company began showing signs of financial strain. In January 2026, Hailo laid off about 10% of its workforce and refocused on its robotics business. In June 2026, it conducted another round of layoffs, cutting approximately 110 employees—roughly half of its total staff. The previously planned SPAC merger also fell through.

Microchip's Strategic Rationale

For Microchip, the acquisition holds clear strategic value. Mark Reiten, Microchip's Senior Vice President, stated: “The acquisition of Hailo will accelerate Microchip's expansion in high‑performance edge AI processing. Hailo's AI acceleration, advanced vision processing, and software ecosystem directly complement Microchip's embedded processing, FPGA, connectivity, security, power, and analog product portfolios.”

The assets Hailo brings include a complete product portfolio covering edge AI accelerators and vision SoCs, supporting diverse workloads such as CNNs, Transformers, and LLMs/VLMs; over 100 existing customers; and a mature developer community of more than 10,000 users. In addition, Hailo's Raspberry Pi ecosystem and developer community provide a sustained engine for translating demand into edge‑AI applications.

Notably, this acquisition continues Microchip's broader AI strategy—the company had previously acquired Neuronix AI Labs to add neural‑network optimization technology for its FPGAs and SoCs.
