AD736ARZ-R7 monolithic true RMS-to-DC converter

The AD736ARZ-R7 from Analog Devices is a low-cost, low-power, precision monolithic true RMS-to-DC converter designed for accurate measurement of complex AC waveforms in portable and industrial instrumentation . Supplied in a compact 8-pin SOIC package on tape and reel, this device is laser-trimmed to provide a maximum error of ±0.3 mV ± 0.3% of reading for sine wave inputs . It features a 200 mV rms full-scale input range (expandable with an external attenuator), an exceptionally high input impedance of 10¹² Ω, and a very low input bias current of 25 pA maximum . Operating from a wide power supply range of +2.8 V, -3.2 V to ±16.5 V, it consumes a maximum supply current of only 200 µA (1 mW), making it ideal for battery-powered systems .

AD736ARZ-R7 converter key features

This converter delivers exceptional accuracy and versatility for true RMS measurements of AC signals . Its core function is to compute the true RMS, average rectified, or absolute value of various input waveforms, including variable duty-cycle pulses and triac-controlled sine waves, with high precision . The requirement of only one external averaging capacitor for true RMS operation simplifies circuit design and minimizes the bill of materials . The ultra-low power consumption is a key benefit for portable, battery-operated equipment like handheld multimeters, significantly extending operational life . Furthermore, it provides a buffered voltage output and achieves its specified accuracy without requiring external trim adjustments .
