VNH5180A-E Automotive Fully Integrated H-Bridge Motor Driver, 8 A 5.5–18 V
The VNH5180A-E, produced by STMicroelectronics, is an AEC-Q100 qualified fully integrated H-bridge driver tailored for brushed DC motor loads in harsh automotive environments. It houses a dual monolithic high-side driver and two low-side switches, all built on ST's proprietary VIPower® M0 process that co-integrates true Power MOSFETs with intelligent signal and protection logic on the same dies. Three dies are assembled into a PowerSSO-36 TP body on electrically isolated leadframes, with an exposed die pad that lifts thermal performance for under-hood and always-on loads.
With 8 A capability, 20 kHz PWM, analogue current sense, and the full automotive protection suite, the VNH5180A-E slots naturally into 12 V car-platform actuators: power-window lifters, sunroof modules, seat-position motors, wiper stages, fuel-pump pre-drivers, and HVAC flap actuators. Outside the car it works for industrial conveyor nudgers, robotic joint actuators, and any brushed-DC load that benefits from a single-chip H-bridge with diagnostic feedback instead of a discrete MOSFET + gate-driver + sense-amplifier spread.
Alternative H-bridge motor driver Models
● VNH7070AY: Next-step upgrade in the same PowerSSO-36 TP envelope, 70 mΩ typ per leg, 20 A output, 4–28 V supply, 38 V abs max, for designs that need lower RDS(on) and higher current without changing the board footprint.
● VNH7100AS: SO-16N package, 100 mΩ per leg, 12 A, 4–28 V, the smaller-footprint sibling when board space matters more than the 8 A/180 mΩ rating of the 5180.
● VNH7040AY: High-current PowerSSO-36 TP variant, 40 mΩ typ, 35 A, 4–28 V, aimed at heavier automotive actuators (seat recliners, power-lift gates) where the 5180's 8 A would saturate.
● BTN8982TA (Infineon NovalithIC™): 8 A–40 A scalable, 5.5–28 V, TO-263-7 or PG-TO263-7-1, cross-vendor alternative when sourcing diversification away from ST's VNH line is required, though pinout and CS scaling differ.
