L6920DTR Synchronous Step-Up Converter

The L6920DTR is a high-efficiency, synchronous boost DC-DC converter from STMicroelectronics, optimized for battery-powered and space-constrained applications that demand a stable, adjustable output voltage from a low-input source. Integrating power MOSFETs and control circuitry in an 8-pin TSSOP-8 package (4.4 mm body width), the device accepts 0.6 V to 5.5 V on the input side, delivers 1.8 V to 5.2 V (fixed 3.3 V or 5 V options) at up to 800 mA switch current, and maintains up to 96 % peak efficiency thanks to synchronous rectification and a typical 10 µA quiescent draw. Internal compensation, soft-start, and cycle-by-cycle current limit simplify BOM, while –40 °C to +85 °C operation and battery-low detection ensure robust field performance.

L6920DTR Step-Up Converter Applications

1. Portable consumer: smartphones/tablets—boost 1-cell Li-Ion to 5 V USB OTG or 3.3 V for camera modules

2. Wearables: wireless headsets—convert 1.2 V NiMH to stable 3.3 V for Bluetooth SoC and audio CODEC

3. Industrial IoT: temperature/pressure sensor nodes—0.6 V start-up guarantees continuous data collection even when energy harvesters droop

3. Medical: pulse-oximeters or drug-delivery pumps—small footprint and low EMI suit body-worn designs

Communications: NB-IoT/LoRa modules—5 V/500 mA bursts for RF PA without external FETs

Alternative start-up boost converters

● TSM108IDT: STMicro 1.5 A boost, pin-compatible TSSOP-8, 0.9 V start, good drop-in upgrade when higher current needed

● L7986ATR: 3 A, 2.7-5.5 V input synchronous boost in QFN, ideal for 2-cell or high-power-density rails

● TPS61253: TI 1.3 A, 0.5 V start, adjustable 1.8-5.5 V output, similar package and BOM count

● MP3418: MPS 1 MHz, 0.9 V start, 1 A switch, QFN-8 for space-constrained wearables
