The LM2596SX-3.3/NOPB from Texas Instruments is a monolithic buck (step-down) switching regulator IC that delivers a fixed 3.3 V output at up to 3 A continuous current from an input voltage range of 4.5 V to 40 V. Operating at a fixed 150 kHz switching frequency, it achieves high efficiency up to 90% with minimal external components, making it ideal for space-constrained and cost-sensitive designs. The device integrates the power switch, oscillator, and control circuitry, and is housed in a TO-263-5 (DDPAK/TO-263) surface-mount package with an exposed thermal pad for efficient heat dissipation. It supports a junction temperature range of −40 °C to +125 °C and includes built-in protection features such as cycle-by-cycle current limiting and thermal shutdown, ensuring reliable operation in harsh environments.

The LM2596SX-3.3/NOPB employs a fixed-frequency, current-mode PWM architecture that provides excellent line and load regulation, fast transient response, and low output ripple. It requires only a few external passive components—an inductor, input/output capacitors, and feedback resistors—to form a complete buck converter, significantly reducing board area and design complexity. The regulator features a low quiescent current and supports an external shutdown pin that reduces supply current to a few microamps, making it suitable for battery-powered applications.
