SN74ACT14DR Hex Schmitt-Trigger Inverter, 4.5V to 5.5V

The SN74ACT14DR is a high-speed hex Schmitt-trigger inverter manufactured by Texas Instruments, belonging to the advanced ACT (Advanced CMOS Technology) logic family and designed for 4.5V to 5.5V VCC operation. This device contains six independent inverters that perform the Boolean function Y = A, each featuring Schmitt-trigger action with distinct positive-going (VT+) and negative-going (VT−) input threshold levels. The built-in hysteresis provides significantly greater noise immunity than conventional inverters, enabling clean and jitter-free output signals even when triggered from the slowest input ramps. Inputs are fully TTL-voltage compatible and can accept voltages up to 5.5V, making this chip an ideal choice for interfacing TTL logic with modern CMOS systems in industrial control, telecom equipment, and consumer electronics applications.

The SN74ACT14DR delivers exceptional switching speed with a maximum propagation delay (tpd) of 11.5 ns at 5V with a 50 pF load, and some datasheet revisions specify up to 12.5 ns under nominal conditions. Each output channel supports ±24 mA drive capability, providing robust high-level sourcing and low-level sinking for driving moderate capacitive loads directly. The device features an ultra-low quiescent supply current of just 2 µA maximum, ensuring minimal power dissipation in battery-powered and always-on designs. Balanced push-pull outputs guarantee symmetrical rise and fall times, while integrated input clamp diodes protect against voltage overshoot and simplify board-level ESD design.

Alternative Schmitt-trigger inverters

● MC74ACT14DR2G (onsemi) - A pin-for-pin compatible hex Schmitt-trigger inverter in SOIC-14 with identical 4.5V–5.5V operation and 24 mA output drive, offering a cost-effective drop-in alternative for volume production.

● SN74AHCT04DR (Texas Instruments) - A TI-manufactured hex inverter with TTL-compatible inputs in the same SOIC-14 footprint, suitable for designs requiring AHCT-series threshold levels instead of ACT.

● HD74ACT14RP (Renesas/Hitachi) - A Japanese-manufactured ACT-series hex inverter in DIP-14 format, ideal for prototyping and through-hole assembly where SOIC reflow is not preferred.

● SN74ACT04DR (Texas Instruments) - A quad (4-channel) ACT Schmitt-trigger inverter from TI in SOIC-14, serving as a functional alternative when only four inverter channels are needed in the design.
